The first time I saw a hummingbird was in the summer of 2001, when I was 10 years old. My family and I were visiting my aunt and uncle who lived in Colorado Springs, CO. We had just spent the day at Garden of the Gods (a National Park) where we watched many birds fly by including hummingbirds. It’s something that sticks with you forever so when we got back to their house, my cousin took me out into her backyard where there is a pond with lots of lily pads floating on it for fish to live on. She told me she could see a hummingbird hovering above one lily pad then flew off behind some bushes nearby so she couldn’t see it anymore but promised if it came back again she would let me know right away because they are very shy animals and not often seen by people other than bird watchers or those who have them as pets which isn’t allowed here in Colorado without special permits from wildlife authorities due to their fragile nature (we don’t have any). So about 20 minutes later after sitting quietly watching this little bird hover above that one lily pad then fly off again behind some bushes near another pond across from her yard, suddenly there he is! He comes flying over towards us like he’s been waiting his whole life for someone else to notice him before finally spotting us humans! And what do you think happened next? You guessed right: He landed right on top of my head!! I’ll never forget how soft his feathers felt against my skin or how beautiful his colors were even though they blend into each other making them difficult for most people besides experts like ornithologists or biologists specializing in birds such as myself who study these beautiful creatures every day trying our best to learn more about
